A tie-down strap, also known as a ratchet strap, lashing strap, or tie down, is a fastener used to secure cargo or equipment during transport. These straps consist of webbing paired with tie-down hardware. This hardware allows the strap to attach to the area surrounding the cargo or equipment, loop over it, and secure it firmly. Typically, they include a tensioning method such as a ratchet.
There are two common types of tie-down straps: loop straps and two-piece straps.
– Loop Straps: A single piece of webbing looped around the item to be secured, with the two endpoints brought together at the tie-down fastener to provide tension and secure fastening.
– Two-Piece Tie-Down Straps: Consist of two separate pieces of webbing, each with its own hardware.
One end is fastened to the area surrounding the equipment, and the pieces are connected, usually at the fastener.
Webbing with a linking device is used for securing goods on trucks, trailers, pallets, boxes, and containers. This process is also known as ratchet lashing, ratchet straps, ratchet tie-downs, tie-down straps, and lashing with webbing.
Custom ratchet straps may feature various hooks, including J hooks, D hooks, E track fittings, with S hooks being the most popular industry standard.
